"Hope" is the thing with feathers - (314), by Emily Dickinson

We had a memorable visit by a wren yesterday. Such an incredible, little, powerful, determined bird, I admired what seemed to be very sharp focus and sense of purpose, and he/she has been my inspiration to teach this week.

I decided to use this poem in my classes, to add the element of hope and continue using the image of a bird. To illustrate it in this blog, I'm using a photo I took of a junco a few months ago. Juncos are also pretty loud, at least here in California, I love this image because he/she is singing.

Enjoy this beautiful poem by Emily Dickinson:

“Hope” is the thing with feathers - That perches in the soul - And sings the tune without the words - And never stops - at all - And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard - And sore must be the storm - That could abash the little Bird That kept so many warm - I’ve heard it in the chillest land - And on the strangest Sea - Yet - never - in Extremity, It asked a crumb - of me.
